Racial Equity Audit Tool Workshop - 17th May 2023

The workshop was an opportunity for funders in the West Midlands to find out more about a racial justice audit tool delivered by Debbie Pippard, Programme Director, Barrow Cadbury Trust, and how it can be used to enable funders to:

  • Identify how much funding is reaching Black and Minoritised communities and addresses racial justice work

  • Produce a snapshot of current portfolios and create a baseline to track funding on a yearly basis

  • Implement targets and strategies to ensure funders are advancing racial justice work

  • Allow greater transparency of current foundation expenditure

Funders for Race Equality Alliance have been in existence since 2015 and produced the racial justice audit tool. A semi-structured Alliance of 40 members, of which Barrow Cadbury Trust is a member, have worked with Black and Minoritised-led organisations to co-create priority areas and tackle inequality in grant making and internal cultures.

The tool provides a simple method based on identifying racial equity led organisations that are working to address racial inequality either by addressing the root causes or the symptoms. Definitions used and guidance on the tool are provided with the tool. Though specific to funders analysing racial equality in grant making, it can be adapted to analyse other inequalities and the intersectionality of inequalities. The demonstration of the tool and examples of how it can be applied was shared.
