Dr David Owen (OBE) has been a longstanding member and Trustee of WMFN since June 2017 when we became a registered charity, and was a committee member for many years before that when we were unincorporated.
His father Sir Alfred Owen was a leading figure in charities and was actively involved in education and regional development, knighted for his public service in 1961. David’s father in David’s own words was “always looking for the best” and David has followed in his father’s footsteps.
David was President of Birmingham Chamber of Commerce in 1980-81 and awarded an Hon. DSc at Aston University in 1988 and served as a member of the Aston University Council from 1980 to 2002. He chaired the committee of the Aston Triangle [arts centre] which was among the first to talk about gay and lesbian culture.
In the 1997 New Year’s honours David was awarded an OBE for services to the community in the West Midlands.
David has worked for the family firm, Rubery Owen, all his life and was Chairman from 1969-2010. David Owen sold their building for a nominal sum to Walsall Housing Regeneration Agency (WHRA), a local charity who offers numerous projects based in Darlaston and surrounding areas.
As a trustee of WMFN, David gave the Board valuable advice and guidance from the business world and his other voluntary sector experience. We will miss him at Board meetings but we are delighted he will continue to contribute to the growth of WMFN as one of our valued Ambassadors.
